Response to Review no. 209

Since the reviewer does not take significant issue either with the overall interpretative framework of Common Destiny, which is in part new, or with its interpretations of the dynamics of the Fascist and the Nazi regimes, an extensive reply would serve no purpose. Readers can judge for themselves the relative balance of older and more recent elements in the book, and the appropriateness – for instance – of republishing in English a long and thickly documented essay outlining my interpretation of Mussolini’s foreign policy that was available until now only to readers of Italian. It is also worth noting that since appearing last summer, the book has sold relatively well for a hardback with real footnotes, and that the Einaudi publishing house (Turin) is bringing out an Italian translation. It must therefore fill some sort of perceived need.
