Response to Review no. 459

I am grateful to Professor Saul for his appreciative and penetrating review. I should perhaps offer a word of explanation about the two notable omissions, which he rightly identifies. As to panel and manuscript painting – along with sculpture, brasses, alabasters, ceramics, tapestry, metalwork and woodwork – I am conscious of lacking both the expertise to venture into these fields and the opportunity to illustrate them in any informative way. With regard to the problem of the financial viability of the late-medieval ‘war state’, I found myself dissatisfied with current formulations, but only able to present an alternative analysis at a length disproportionate to other themes. Volumes such as these are beset by unhappy compromises.
