Response to Review of Edge of Empires: A History of Georgia

I appreciate very much being given an advance copy of Ronald Suny’s review of ‘Edge of Empires’. Naturally, I take a far more negative and uncompromising view than he does of the Soviet contribution to Georgia’s welfare, and a rather more positive view of the relevance of mediaeval princely relations. This all goes to show that there is room for a plurality of views and approaches to the history of any country, let alone one as problematic as Georgia’s. And let me assure Professor Suny that my failure to make myself known to him after attending a lecture of his in London was not for want of desire to meet him again, but out of reluctance to add to the many people in his audience who were besieging him with questions.
