Response to Review of New Netherland and the Dutch Origins of American Religious Liberty

Reading this review was a great pleasure – not simply because it was positive, but primarily because the reviewer fully understood what I was hoping to accomplish and how I set about doing so. In short, I feel the book has been understood and appreciated. No author can hope for more. As for the reviewer's final caveat, I cannot disagree with him there. My emphasis perhaps erred on the negative side to counterbalance the often easy assumption of a smooth and glorious transition to later forms of pluralism. Ultimately, I hoped that my interpretive framework was strong but flexible enough to allow for somewhat different readings of various situations like this one. That was, after all, an intrinsic aspect of Dutch tolerance as I understand it. Many thanks for such a thoughtful and perceptive review.
