Response to Review of Paying Freedom’s Price: A History of African Americans in the Civil War

This reviewer's sense of what is needed for an undergraduate survey course that needs to cover a lot of ground within a semester is quite different from the reality, at least in the United States.  The reviewer's desire for more thorough exploration of nuances, complexities, regional variations, and specificities seems better suited to a graduate course than for the intended audience of this series.  I appreciate the positive comments, which seem to me to suggest that the text will serve its target audience appropriately.   Finally, I am glad to have this opportunity to state that this series required me to eliminate a majority of my footnotes and remove quotations of primary sources in the text, again for the purpose of reaching a different audience than the reviewer has in mind.
