Response to Review of Sport and Ireland: a History

I would like to thank Dr. Griffin for the care and attention he has taken with this review, and for the extremely generous words he has written about my book.

I entirely accept the point he makes that cycling deserved more in-depth treatment and that ‘attitudinal and institutional changes’ in the GAA that were facilitated by the Peace Process equally warranted a deeper exploration. Explanation for these exclusions lies with the demands of space. I wished to make a broad survey in one volume of sport across Irish history and this inevitably required me to leave out things that I would ideally have included. Nonetheless, I particularly regret not including more material on cycling. Looking to the future, there is great scope for a significant research project which should broadly examine the impact of the Peace Process on Irish sport.
