This collection explores the history of the slavery in U.S. It examines the lives of the enslaved people, resistance movements and how the slavery impacted the society. The reviews here talk about the abolition of slavery, race, and the emancipation.   This special issue was created by Juliana Adjijato Jalo, a student at Queen Mary University on student placement at the IHR.

For every large historical topic – and the transatlantic slave trade is certainly a large one – there is a need for good small books to introduce the academic understanding of the topic to students and the general public. The writing of a good small book on a large topic, however, can be no small challenge.
